Design & Technology is a generic title for a range of related activities whose main focus is on Designing and Making products.  There is an emphasis on pupils being creative, innovative, healthy and environmentally aware. This is true for KS 3, 4 and 5 courses.

At Key Stage 3…
Pupils are involved in a range of project-based activities during this Key Stage.  Through these they develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of Graphics, Food Technology, Electronics and Resistant Materials.  They are also introduced to the basics of Computer Aided Design and Manufacture.

At Key Stage 4…
Pupils can opt to study Graphic Products, Product Design or Food Technology to GCSE level with the AQA examining board.  During Year 10 a series of mini-projects familiarises pupils with the requirements of the GCSE coursework component, such as researching, analysing, planning and evaluating.  These projects also allow pupils the opportunity to develop as designers.  Most of the theoretical aspects of these courses are covered too.  The very important GCSE coursework project is started toward the latter end of the year, with its completion in Year 11.  This one piece of coursework is worth 60% of the final grade, with the examination contributing the remaining 40%.  During Year 11 further theory is covered, along with revision and examination preparation.

At Key Stage 5…
For those that wish to study Design & Technology further the faculty offer two courses: Design & Technology: Product Design and Design & Technology: Food. Both of these courses can be taken up to AS level at the end of Year 12 or further to A2 level at the end of Year 13.

Facilities

With a subject as diverse as this it would take up too much space to list every piece of equipment we have!

For Graphics we have a dedicated Graphics teaching room with drawing equipment, hot wire cutter, rotary trimmer, etc. The room also has ‘flip over’ technical drawing units at every table with sets of technical drawing equipment for each. There are 12 computers with access to the full network range of software plus specialist packages for Computer Aided Design and Manufacture. Two A3 printers and a professional quality Plotter/Cutter is also available, for drawings larger than A3 or to have graphics work cut by the machine.

For Resistant Materials we have three dedicated workshops with all the tools and items of equipment you would expect to find for working with woods, metals and plastics.  Machine tools include wood and metal lathes, pedestal drills, vacuum forming and line bending machines, polishing wheels, etc.  There is also a heat treatment room which houses the welding bench and forge.

For Food Technology we have two food technology rooms with  all the tools and equipment you would expect to find in a well stocked kitchen. Pupils work in kitchen ‘bays’, each with its own oven, sink, preparation areas and storage cupboards.  Computer access is also available in these rooms.

In addition to the above we have a general purpose technology room with electronics benching, resistant materials work benches and work surfaces.
