What can a student expect when using ICT at The Streetly School?
:: Interesting, relevant, well prepared courses for all Key Stages.
:: An increasing amount of material is available on our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which allows students to access lesson materials from any internet-connected PC. Look at the homepage of this site for further information.
:: Individual support and extensive opportunities for self-study at lunchtime and after-school computer clubs.

The courses we follow…

Year 7 (1 hour per week):

:: E-Safety / Introduction - students are introduced to ICT at Streetly, good working practices and the important issue of E-Safety is discussed.
:: Multimedia Quiz - prepare an interactive quiz incorporating several multimedia features.
:: Desktop Publishing - learn about some of the more advanced functions of Desktop Publishing and produce a brochure to meet a given need. In this project, students will also learn how to conduct effective web-based research and will use data collection techniques to determine what users would like to see in their brochure.
:: Which Phone? - learn how to use a spreadsheet to model different scenarios and conduct “what-if?” analyses.
:: Traffic Lights - learn the fundamentals of system control and produce a program to control a traffic light system.

Year 8 (1 hour per week):

:: Weather System - design a presentation system that collects live web-based data and manipulates it to meet an audience’s needs.
:: The Web: using it and publishing to it – look at how to check that information they collect from the web is accurate and unbiased. Students learn about the principles of effective web page design and produce their own mini-website using web design software.
:: The Cinema - a combined project where students consolidate skills and knowledge gained to use ICT in a “mini-business” project, incorporating using the skills they have gained previously.
:: Log Flume - design and develop a control system to control a log flume ride, while addressing the requirements for efficiency and safety for customers.  After ensuring the ride control system works, students then have to convince the directors of the theme park that it is worth buying by producing a business presentation.

Year 9 (1 hour per week):

Year 9 is a time for developing students’ skills of project management and advanced ICT, and also helps to prepare them for Key Stage 4. To facilitate this, students embark on a whole-year project based on the OCR Nationals units of work, in which they look at using ICT independently for a variety of tasks. The emphasis in this year is on developing increasing independence and confidence when using ICT.

Key Stage 4

Students who opt for ICT work towards gaining their OCR Nationals First Award (worth 1 GCSE at A-C grade) and then progressing to the Award (worth 2 GCSEs at A-C grade when added to the First Award).  This practical course allows students to develop their ICT skills in a variety of specialist areas.  We cover the following units:

:: IT Skills for Business
:: Multimedia
:: Video
:: Graphics for the Web

Students who do not wish to opt for an ICT qualification will have their National Curriculum entitlement through activities in other subjects. This is monitored by the ICT department and is planned in conjunction with other subject departments.

Key Stage 5:

Students work on the new AQA A-Level specification.  There are two units (Info 1 and 2) in the AS year, and a further two in the A2 year.  The unit details are as follows:

:: Info 1 - Practical Problem Solving in the Digital World. (1.5 hour exam, 50% of AS / 25% of A level)  Students create a complex ICT product (for example: an electronic photo album; a rolling multimedia presentation for a school open day; a website for a local nursery; organising a blog for a local councillor; producing invoices for a small business; organising a set of podcasts for a teacher; an interactive multimedia display for a tourist information centre.) During the course of project development, students concentrate on collecting the evidence for project planning and testing and use it to support them in the examination.

:: Info 2 - Living in the Digital World. (1.5 hour exam, 50% of AS / 25% of A level)  This is a theory unit where students look at the wider aspects of ICT in modern society, investigating themes like: Why is ICT being used?  Is it appropriate to use ICT?  What are the implications of its use for me, now and in the future?  How does a particular use of ICT affect society?

:: Info 3 – Use of ICT in the Digital World. (2 hour exam, 30% of A level)  This unit looks at the fast changing subject of ICT, including developments in technology and ICT system capabilities, and how this might affect the world that makes use of ICT.  Students look at how ICT is used in a variety of organisations, and how future developments will affect them.

:: Info 4 – Use of ICT in the Digital World – Practical Issues. (coursework, 20% of A level) Students complete a substantial project involving the production of an  ICT-related system over an extended period of time. The scope for this is wide - it is important that the project gives students the change to develop transferrable skills and also demonstrates their knowledge of developing ICT systems for organisations.
